The "Public Affairs and Innovation" option trains students to analyze the political dimensions of innovation. It allows students to acquire theoretical and practical skills in areas such as the use of market instruments in public policies (carbon market, health tariff reform, etc.), public choices in terms of valuing innovation (evaluation of the performance of eco-technologies, determination of drug prices for rare diseases, etc.), risk management using technical and regulatory tools (traceability of agri-food products, etc.), and the development of new technologies. ), risk management through technical and regulatory tools (traceability of agro-industrial products, regulation of the chemical substances market, etc.), and consultation procedures (organization of public debates for infrastructure projects, relations between companies and their stakeholders, etc.).
These activities are now part of the daily life of engineers holding positions of responsibility in business, government, international organizations or the non-profit sector. They aim at managing public affairs, characterized by uncertainties linked to the development of technologies and markets, by problems at the interface between the organization and its stakeholders (regulators, concerned public investors...) and by the increasing articulation between the public and private sectors, between the national, European and international levels of government. They require a combination of technical mastery of innovation and a thorough understanding of the political issues at stake, particularly in terms of regulatory changes, relations with civil society and the organization of economic exchanges.
Thus, the training provided by the option responds to a growing demand for engineers capable of putting their technical skills at the service of projects and the interface between industrial development, regulation and the management of stakeholder expectations. It draws on political science, law, sociology, and social studies of science to provide the tools to identify, analyze, and manage the political dimensions of technical projects. The internships allow students to apply these skills in fields characterized by strong technical and social uncertainties. They take place in partnership with various actors (companies, public administrations, NGOs or universities).
