The ANR funded project Algopol gathers computer scientists and sociologists to study recommendations on the internet. In december 2013, an App has been opened to Facebook users to visualise their network of friends and to allow analysis of actual uses on a large sample of users. Thanks to the 12700 participants, and a few hours of pluridisciplinary work on the data, it has been possible to describe three groups of uses of Facebook and six activity profiles. These results are available here  and a summary has been published by le Monde. It will close at the end of April, due to an evolution of Facebook API.
