Peter Doralt is Professor Emeritus of Commercial and Company Law at WU Vienna University of Economics and Business, and Stephan Leixnering is Senior Scientist at the Research Institute for Urban Management and Governance, at WU Vienna. The two authors’ presentation stems from the question asked by US corporate giants in a Business Roundtable’s 2019 Statement on the Purpose of the Corporation: What are companies for? Taking an inter-disciplinary perspective, using both law and social sciences, they will examine how Austrian corporate law has introduced a legal provision requiring corporate leaders to consider plural interests in their managing of the corporation. Mainly, they will show how the emerging form of the ‘enterprise’ vis-à-vis the ‘corporation’, has led to the legal consideration of the stakeholders’ interests, as well as the enterprise’s own interest.
