Environmental governance through digital technologies
The case of cereal farming
Summary: In a context where agriculture faces strong environmental controversies calling into question the objectives and techniques underlying agricultural productivism, digital tools are put forward as one of the solutions that would facilitate the sector’s ecological transition. Satellites, software, decision support tools, sensors and algorithms would allow for new modernity in agriculture, both technologically and environmentally. At the crossroads of sociology and Science and Technology Studies (STS), Jeanne Oui examines the ecological promise of digital agriculture by delving into the knowledge, markets and uses of these tools. Based on a qualitative survey of scientists, companies and farmers in France and the United States, her presentation will focus on the history of this technological promise for conventional agriculture, and on the political and technical effects of an environmental governance of agricultural practices through digital technologies.
The seminar will be held in French. Participation is upon registration only, please use this form to register.
