Social Sciences on a trey: Sandrine Bubendorff and Caroline Rizza (SES)
19 October 2020 • 10h-12h • Telecom Paris • Room 3A247, possibilité de visio conférence

This seminar is organized around the social sciences (and digital), alternating presentations by social science researchers from Télécom Paris and other institutions on the plateau (on either side of the Nationale 118).

It will take place from Télécom Paris (digital school). The premieres will take place on Zoom, but who knows? One day, perhaps it will be held in the already celebrated flagship of architecture that hosts Télécom Paris. A room is reserved for those who prefer to come on site.

For the first session, we hope to see many of you welcoming this new space for exchanges, inaugurated by a presentation of :

Sandrine Bubendorff and Caroline Rizza (SES), "Making sense collectively in times of crisis: the use of Wikipedia during the covid-19 pandemic".

Abstract:

Falling within the field of "crisis informatics", this article highlights the ways in which citizens collectively elaborate meaning through social media during a particularly uncertain phenomenon, the Covid-19 pandemic. We conducted a qualitative analysis using ethnographic work carried out on the pages of the encyclopedia in connection with the pandemic and interviews with Wikipedian contributors and a member of the Wikimedia-France Foundation. We thus show how the know-how of the site's contributors makes it possible to offer readers a clearer understanding of a dramatic event that is currently a vector of uncertainty, and we highlight the specificities of the health crisis compared to other so-called civil security crises. Specifically, the construction of meaning related to the pandemic requires an unprecedented reorganization of the ways of doing things, particularly according to the successive stages of the pandemic and in the face of the phenomenon of disinformation associated with the crisis.

The analyses and results thus presented are part of the MESCOV research project "Social media during the covid-19 crisis: information circulation and citizen initiatives", subsidized by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, Analysis, Research and Expertise Committee (CARE).  It aims to specialize on certain aspects of the Covid-19 crisis the pre-existing ANR MACIV project on crisis management, social media and citizen engagement (ANR-17-CE39-0015).
