Reimagining the Green and Pleasant Land: From Conservation to Capitalisation in Rural England

This talk outlines the metamorphosis of land from being considered a special good shielded from unfettered markets and speculation to its recent rediscovery as an asset class. Against the backdrop of austerity, agricultural restructuring, and the concentration of land ownership in rural England, it demonstrates how this discursive shift has reconfigured the moral imaginary of ‘The green and pleasant land’ (William Blake) by creating an unlikely alliance between landowners, resource economists, property managers, and conservationists. This alliance values land and nature itself in terms of future cash flows.

Lise Cornilleau is a lecturer and researcher at the Laboratoire Printemps – Professions, Institutions, Temporalités [Professions, Institutions, Temporalities], UFR of social sciences, University of Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines-CNRS.
