Pfizer has agreed to sponsor the chair “Intellectual Property and Markets for Technology,” joining Air Liquide, Philips, and Microsoft. Based in New York City, Pfizer is one of the largest research-oriented pharmaceutical firms in the world, and the 4th in France. This sponsorship will allow us to add a new axis of research on intellectual property in emerging markets, which will be managed by Margaret Kyle, who joined CERNA in September 2014. She has a number of papers in this area, including “Pharmaceutical Development Before and After TRIPS” (Review of Economics and Statistics, 2012) and “Intellectual Property Protection and the Geography of Trade” (Journal of Industrial Economics, 2013). New research topics will include the effect of patents on access to new pharmaceuticals in developing countries, and the impact of globalization and trade liberalization on research and development.
