by Sophie Hooge and Roland Stasia While the management of R&D and innovation projects has become essential to ensure companies’ sustainability and competitiveness, traditional management control represents a real danger, as it creates the risk that the R&D budget can be considered as “fixed costs” and the projects of innovation as development projects. To understand the risks of this instrumental discrepancy with the contemporary issues concerning intensive innovation, this book offers a critical review of the management processes in the R&D area, and an approach to developing a management instrumentation adapted to the current specificities of innovation and research projects. The approach adopted here calls for a deep transformation of the management control tools. On the one hand, it includes a system of frugal R&D resource management supported by a leverage specific thereto, and on the other hand a particularly original innovation project management tool; based on a triangular approach of the management through value, it combines economic uncertainties, corporate strategy and the commitment of the competent actors.
